Major League Baseball, like any professional sport, has seen its fair share of fights over the years. Some are more hostile than others, of course. Often nothing more happens than a confrontation. A famous example of things turning violent came in 1917 when Babe Ruth punched an umpire and was carried off the field by police.

Perhaps even more outrageous than that was a Minor League scuffle involving International League standout Izzy Alcantara. It happened during a match between the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons on July 3rd, 2001. Alcantara, after being hit by a pitch from Blas Cedeno, turned around and kicked Barons catcher Jeremy Salazar before rushing the mound.

Benches cleared and punches were thrown, but ultimately no one was hurt. Alcantara’s punishment for the outburst was a six-game suspension. He never found much success in the Major Leagues, playing only two seasons with the Red Sox, and one with the Milwaukee Brewers before departing for the Mexican League.
