Lucrative TV deals for professional sports in the 21st century allowed athletes to sign contracts unlike anything players from previous eras could ever imagine. Angels great Mike Trout made history in 2019 when he signed a 12-year extension worth $360 million to become the highest-paid player in MLB history. Just one year later, he was dethroned by Mookie Betts, who signed a 12-year deal of his own worth $365 million with the crosstown Los Angeles Dodgers.

MOOKIE BETTS SIGNED THE LARGEST CONTRACT IN MLB HISTORY

Mookie Betts entered the MLB in 2014 with the Boston Red Sox. He made three All-Star teams, won an AL MVP Award, and a World Series before getting traded to the Dodgers in 2020 along with David Price and cash for Alex Verdugo, Connor Wong, and Jeter Downs. Betts was offered the record-setting extension before playing a single game with his new team after the MLB resumed play in July of 2020. The Dodgers went on to win the World Series in Betts’ very first season with him as the team MVP.
