Monday night’s matchup between the Buccaneers and Giants was a game seen by most as lopsided and one expected to be a blowout win for the Bucs. However, with Tampa’s upcoming matchup against the NFC South rival Saints in six days, what ensued was what appeared to be a trap game that ended up being quite an exciting and competitive matchup in which both defenses played pretty well in neutralizing the opposition. TB’s defense proved to be the better of the two though as it came away with two INTs and broke up a two-point conversion attempt by NYG that would’ve tied the game with less than 30 seconds left. Despite a valiant effort by Daniel Jones and co., Tampa was able to squeeze out the win 25-23 as they move to 6-2 on the season.

  • Giants were pulling some tricks early

1. Daniel Jones can win and lose games, sometimes in the same game

It may sound contradictory, but somehow Giants QB Daniel Jones comes up with the biggest plays of the game for his team to put them in a position to win and suddenly erases all that effort with one costly mistake. It’s the equivalent of running a race, leading the entire time, and then tripping and losing right before crossing the finish line (in Jones’ case, this quite literally happened against PHI). Since getting his first NFL win as a starter (against TB, ironically), Jones is 3-17 with all three wins coming against the Washington Football Team. Time is running out for the young signal-caller to eliminate these mistakes from his game. He can be a franchise QB without those brutal decisions/throws, but if he can’t stop turning the ball over, NYG will be looking for a new franchise QB sooner than later.

2. The Bucs’ defense is good enough to overcome any offensive struggles

Halfway through the season, TB’s defense has looked championship-caliber and has the ability to carry the team when the offense isn’t clicking. Creating turnovers was key to the Bucs winning this game after the offense was stymied by NYG’s defense in the first half. Thankfully for TB, its offense started to get things going and capitalized on the turnovers by putting up more points in the second half. When Tampa needed just one last stop, Antoine Winfield Jr. came through in the clutch on the biggest defensive play of the game. Paired with a young, promising secondary and a seasoned, experienced interior, the Bucs are going to be a challenge to score against for any offense when points are desperately needed.

3. TB has one of the best young Safety duos in the NFL

The Bucs’ defense has been successful thanks in part to its young, talented safety duo of Antione Winfield Jr. and Jordan Whitehead. Both players led their team in tackles on Monday night and Winfield Jr. made the play of the night on a game-saving deflection to prevent NYG from tying it up on a 2-point conversion with less than 30 seconds left. Despite a lack of experience, these two Safeties were seen flying around and making plays from all over the field on MNF, showing that they can get the job done whenever they are called upon. It will be exciting to see how these two will develop and continue to improve, providing Tampa with a fierce safety net at the last line of defense.

After another strong defensive performance from the Bucs helped them escape this MNF trap game matchup, TB is looking to next week where they face a hot Saints team that has adapted to not having Michael Thomas on the field. Holding Alvin Kamara in check, who has been the driving force for New Orleans in Thomas’ absence, will be key for Tampa and it would be a HUGE win that would put them further ahead in the NFC South, and in contention for the No.1 NFC seed. This game will be even more interesting if Thomas returns and Antonio Brown makes his Buccaneers debut like they’re both expected to do so.

The Giants on the other hand are still technically only a couple games out of a playoff spot in the “NFC Least”, but can clinch another top-5 pick with more losing efforts over the second half of the season. Daniel Jones’ future may be on the line if he fails to win more than three games for the second consecutive year as NYG could look into drafting Justin Fields or Trey Lance to lead the franchise under a new regime, assuming the Jets take Trevor Lawrence first overall.
