A game many viewers would’ve anticipated to be a blowout before the season turned into an unexpectedly exciting and close matchup between AFC East rivals. The New York Jets were putting on a show early thanks to Joe Flacco’s vintage performance, but it was not enough to stop Cam Newton and Jakobi Meyers’ late-game heroics as NE stormed back, overcoming a 10-pt 4th quarter deficit to squeak out a 30-27 win off of Nick Folk’s GW FG at the buzzer. NE kept its ambitious albeit slim playoff hopes alive while NYJ’s journey towards the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft continued with yet another addition to the L column.

Final Results: NE (-430) d. @NYJ (+350) 30-27 [NYJ +9.5 | o42]
  • Pats survived a scare after Folk’s GW FG

  • Cam made a Superman play on this one

  • Vintage Flacco was tossing dimes all night

  • Byrd made moves to get deep into NYJ teritory

  • Jackson’s pick set up NE’s game-tying drive

  • Meyers had a bday to remember (169 YDS)

1. Jakobi Meyers could be emerging as NE’s WR1

Outside of Julian Edelman, the Patriots’ WR corps is one of the youngest groups in the league and lacks a true WR1. Slot WR Edelman isn’t getting any younger, and with him now back on the injury list after being placed on IR, NE might move on from him soon as his current contract is set to end in 2021. The most likely wideout currently on the roster to take over his spot as the Patriots go-to wide receiver would be Jakobi Meyers, who proved tonight that he is more than capable of such with a breakout performance (12 REC, 169 YDS). While it’s certainly still too early to deem him the Pats’ next star receiver, his potential is promising, especially as a 2019 UDFA.

2. The Jets are locked in on Trevor Lawrence

The New York Jets continued their path towards locking up the 2021 draft’s No. 1 overall pick with a loss on MNF as the only winless team left in the NFL. A huge upset and morale booster looked highly possible for most of the game as NYJ took its lead over NE all the way into the 4th quarter thanks to Joe Flacco’s big night. The organization, however, must’ve realized that barely beating NE in a meaningless MNF game wasn’t worth losing 15+ years of potentially having Trevor Lawrence under center. Considering a despicable 12-men on the field penalty late in the game and questionable play-calling in the fourth quarter, tonight’s loss appeared to be a calculated effort to further their tanking efforts instead of gaining some instant gratification.

3. The Patriots 2020 season is still up in the air

As the New England Patriots begin a new chapter in their storied history, several people are left to wonder what it will behold. It’s unclear what to call NE at this point in its first season post-Brady; on one hand, the team is fresh off two decades of dominance, still has the greatest coach of all-time, a former MVP at QB, and a team that just overcame a 10-pt deficit in the 4th quarter with their backs against the wall. On the other hand, they just lost the greatest QB of all-time, had the most opt outs in the league, “sold out,” have a 3-5 record, and barely beat the worst team in the league. Nobody really knows what to expect from NE right now, so these next few weeks will go a long way in understanding what the Patriots will be in this highly-anticipated new chapter.

With Julian Edelman’s current injury status and time in Massachusetts possibly ending soon, Jakobi Meyers’ emergence and the rest of this young receiving corps will be something to watch out for in the second half of the season. 2019 1st Rd Pick N’Keal Harry has struggled to get going so far in his career and if he fails to eventually break out, it’s very likely Meyers and maybe even Damiere Byrd could slide above Harry on the depth chart as they continue to show better progression. The defense will be tested going forward as it goes up against the likes of Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, Justin Herbert, and Josh Allen in the coming weeks. Wins against these QBs and their teams are of incredible importance as NE continues to fight for its life to earn a 12th consecutive playoff appearance.

The New York Jets’ season is obviously beyond repair at this point and getting through this season with next years’ No. 1 draft spot secured has to be the top goal for them. As the Jets prepare to hit the reset button, having a solid draft is critical to this team building their future with Trevor Lawrence most likely the centerpiece they’re targeting. However, Lawrence won’t change much by himself. They’ll need to surround him with a better coaching staff, better offensive line, and better weapons if they hope he doesn’t disappoint like Sam Darnold has to this point in his young career.
