Grade: A-

Arguably the biggest draft “riser” throughout the oddity that was the 2020 college football season, Zach Wilson propelled BYU into the national spotlight with a 9-0 start before falling to the equally-surprising Chanticleers. Though the Cougars fielded a quality team and faced a relatively cushy schedule, Wilson made astonishing throws on a weekly basis and was more often than not the catalyst to their strong play.

Casually launching a 40-yard dime on the run or faking out multiple defenders before delivering a laser almost became routine for the Utah native, and his target was rarely missed. The competition he faced this past season, however, was far inferior to that of the SEC, Big Ten, or even ACC, regardless of how far the latter has fallen. Despite that, his special traits became quite clear — uncanny improvisational ability paired with a quick, powerful arm.

In addition to his arm, he’s also a legitimate rushing threat with the speed to break contain and either buy time to throw, or take off and pick up the first down himself. Along with great pocket awareness, he showed a consistent ability to drop his arm angle or throw off his back foot, getting rid of the ball any which way in the face of pressure. Consistently flashing his anticipatory skills while peppering the entire field without a set platform at times, there’s no doubt Wilson is a special talent.

His natural abilities flashed repeatedly, but he’ll likely experience some growing pains while adjusting to NFL schemes and athletes. Durability will be a concern as well, considering he’s already had surgery on his throwing shoulder. The NFL will be a jarring step-up, but the pure arm talent, accuracy, athleticism, and poise Wilson displayed throughout his junior campaign all point toward star potential on Sundays.

Pro Comp: QB Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns)

Projected Round: Top-10 Pick
