By Jaime Segui, PSO Director of Baseball Player Personnel
May 07, 2020

For this ranking, PSO developed a grading system in order to evaluate each individual player before collectively grading every team’s outfield based on their LF, CF, RF, & 4th OF. Each of the teams’ three starting outfielders were wighted equally with the fourth outfielder’s grade worth half of a starting outfielder’s grade. The grades are mainly based on how each player is expected to produce in 2020. Recent stats since 2017 are also taken into consideration.

Once all of the outfielders were graded, the average grades for each team were taken and the the 10 best teams were ranked from there. Don’t agree with some of PSO’s rankings? Go ahead and create your own ranking below and share/compare with a friend!

PSO Rankings

1
Los Angeles Dodgers

LF: Cody Bellinger

CF: AJ Pollock

RF: Mookie Betts

4th OF: Joc Pederson

The best outfield in baseball has two of the best hitters in the sport. The reigning NL MVP Cody Bellinger hit .305/.406/1.035 and mustered a 7.8 fWAR in 2019. Mookie Betts (acquired by the Dodgers in February) has hit .319/.413/.991 since his MVP season in 2018. Bellinger and Betts are also two of the best fielders the game has to offer, combining for more than 30 DRS in 2019 alone.

Pollock and Pederson are two very solid major league players that get overlooked with the incredible outfield depth the Dodgers posses. In 2019, Pederson hit 36 HRs and drove in 74. And Pollock had a 108 OPS+ in 2019, giving them four hitters above major league average (avg. is 100).

2
Minnesota Twins

LF: Eddie Rosario

CF: Byron Buxton

RF: Max Kepler

4th OF: Jake Cave

When thinking of the best outfields in baseball, the Twins are not a team that instantly comes to mind, but Minnesota has it all. The Puerto Rican native Eddie Rosario drove in a career-high 109 RBI and hit 32 bombs in 2019.

On the opposite corner, Max Kepler had a breakout season where he slugged .519, hit 36 dingers, and led the Twins with a 4.4fWAR. Buxton commands the center position as baseball’s fastest player, with a sprint speed of 30.3 ft/s. And fourth outfielder Jake Cave hit .258/.351/.805 last season and can play all three outfield positions.

3
Colorado Rockies

LF: Raimel Tapia

CF: David Dahl

RF: Charlie Blackmon

4th OF: Ian Desmond

It seems like the Rockies always have a great hitting outfield, and this group is no exception. Leading the way is Blackmon who is one of the most feared hitters in the game with an OPS of non-lower than .860 since 2016.

Also, the 26-year-old duo of Tapia and Dahl is one that has plenty of potential. They both took big strides in 2019, each batting over .275 in 100+ games. Finally, three-time Silver Slugger winner, Ian Desmond, hit 20 HRs last season and gives Colorado the luxury of having a power-hitting platoon option.

4
New York Yankees

LF: Clint Frazier

CF: Brett Gardner

RF: Aaron Judge

4th OF: Mike Tauchman

The Yankees have a very deep outfield but have been unable to stay healthy these past 3 seasons. With Hicks set to miss a big chunk of this upcoming season, 36-year-old Brett Gardner has been asked to step-up yet again for New York. But the longest-tenured Yankee had probably his best season yet in 2019, hitting .251/.325/.503.

In Right Field, Aaron Judge is one of the league’s elite hitters when healthy. His power is evident, but his glove somehow goes under the radar despite having 20 DRS in 2019. Frazier and Tauchman are expected to share time in LF this upcoming season after combining for 25 HRs last year as initial depth pieces.

5
Houston Astros

LF: Michael Brantley

CF: George Springer

RF: Kyle Tucker

4th OF: Josh Reddick

The outfield squad of the defending AL Champs got better last season with the addition of Michael Brantley. Brantley hit .311/.372/.875 in his first year of a two-year deal with the Astros. Springer controls the outfield and looks to continue to develop as one of the most feared lead-off hitters in the whole league. He has hit 124 HRs since becoming an everyday outfielder in 2016.

Tucker and Reddick are a perfect mix of youth and experience. Tucker was Houston’s Minor League Player of the Year in 2019 after becoming the Pacific Coast League’s fifth 30-30 player in history. Reddick continues to be a solid defensive Right Fielder, saving 11 defensive runs last season and is still quietly effective at the plate.

6
Atlanta Braves

LF: Marcell Ozuna

CF: Ender Inciarte

RF: Ronald Acuña Jr.

4th OF: Nick Markakis

The defending NL East champions have added a two-time All-Star to the Outfield mix in Marcell Ozuna. Ozuna has taken a step back offensively these past two seasons, but the potential is there for a bounce-back in 2020. Just two seasons ago, he hit 37 HRs and drove in 124 runs. Inciarte had an injury-plagued season in 2019, but still has the wheels to be a stolen-base threat anytime he reaches base.

As for Acuña, the 22-year-old phenom almost became the fifth player in MLB history to join the 40-40 club in 2019. He also won a Silver Slugger, made his first All-Star Game, and finished fifth in the NL MVP voting. Duvall, a former 30 HR hitter, is also a solid fielder (42 career DRS in the OF) and has very sneaky wheels. He is in the league’s 88th percentile in sprint speed (28.7 ft/s).

7
Milwaukee Brewers

LF: Avisail Garcia

CF: Lorenzo Cain

RF: Christian Yelich

4th OF: Brock Holt

Yelich repeated his insane 2018 with an even more impressive 2019, which was unfortunately cut short due to a broken kneecap in September. In 130 games, the former NL MVP hit an astounding .329/.429/1.100.

Alongside him, Lorenzo Cain and Avisail Garcia give the Brewers a very balanced outfield. Cain had 22 DRS in CF and Garcia hit .282 with 20 HRs & 72 RBI for the Tampa Bay Rays. Brock Holt, the only player to ever hit for the cycle in the postseason, gives the Brewers a lot of options with his ability to play all over the field.

8
Cincinatti Reds

LF: Jesse Winker

CF: Shogo Akiyama

RF: Nick Castellanos

4th OF: Aristides Aquino

This Outfield has a lot of offensive potential. Newly-acquired Nick Castellanos is a year removed from leading the majors with 58 doubles. After the Chicago Cubs traded for him mid-season, he posted a 1.002 OPS over 51 games. Winker, a former top prospect, is still trying to find his footing as a constant Major League hitter. In 2019, there was a stretch from April to May, where he slugged .667 and showed Reds’ fans that he has the ability to produce big-time in this league.

Akiyama hit 44 HRs in his last two seasons in Japan’s NPB, which many evaluators consider better competition than Triple-A. He signed a 3y/$21M deal this past winter with the Reds. Aquino looks like the odd man out, but is still the same guy who bursted onto the scene hitting with a NL rookie record 14 HRs in his first 25 games. “The Punisher” became the fastest player ever to reach nine career home runs.

9
Los Angeles Angels

LF: Justin Upton

CF: Mike Trout

RF: Brian Goodwin

4th OF: Jo Adell

Having Mike Trout automatically puts LA in contention for the best Outfields in the game. The best player in the sport by far has produced a tremendous .308/.422/1.009 clip since 2012. He also ranks 47th in career fWAR with 73.4. The three-time AL MVP has a solid Outfield around him as well.

Justin Upton missed most of 2019 with a severe toe sprain and a knee injury, but in 2018, Upton smashed 30 HRs and drove in 85 RBIs. Goodwin broke out last season posting a 1.9 fWAR and hitting .262/.326/.796 in 136 games. Adell is expected to join the Angels’ Outfield this year and is currently ranked fourth in Fangraphs’ 2020 MLB Prospect Rankings.

10
New York Mets

LF: J.D. Davis

CF: Michael Conforto

RF: Yoenis Cespedes

4th OF: Brandon Nimmo

The Mets Outfield isn’t the greatest in the league but is led by All-Star OF Michael Conforto. The 27-year-old has driven in 242 runs since 2017 (6th most among qualified NL outfielders). Left Fielder J.D. Davis exploded in 2019 slugging .527 in 140 games for the Mets last year. He also hit 22 HRs and his 91.4 mph Exit Velocity ranks in the Top-10 percent of all MLB hitters.

Yoenis Cespedes is set to return this upcoming season after suffering ankle injuries at his ranch. Cespedes missed all of 2019 and hasn’t played more than 81 games since 2016. Nimmo, a very solid fourth Outfielder option, hit 17 HRs and .263/.404/.886 in 2018.
