The week leading up to the NFL’s season premiere has been chaos with breaking news left and right. Now that the dust has settled, let’s review how every team is looking heading into the NFL’s 100th season.

Cardinals had 1st priority on the waiver wire and they took full advantage by adding 6 players on Claim Day, with Bullard (from CHI) & Marsh (SF) being the most significant additions. They released some talented players as seen above, and had to place their best two corners on some sort of reserve list. Expect opposing teams to have a field day in the passing game against Arizona the first 6 weeks, at least.

2019 UDFA’s on Roster: WR Olamide Zaccheaus
The big story in the A was the kicker situation that seemed incomplete all offseason. The team moved on from 44-year-old Matt Bryant, and originally replaced him with Tavecchio. After a disappointing preseason, the Falcons changed course and brought Bryant back while releasing Tavecchio. Paulsen was projected to make the roster, but they ultimately went with 2018 UDFA Jaeden Graham instead.

Baltimore flipped backup Guard Jermain Eluemunor to New England for a swap of Day 3 picks. Shane Ray waas rumored to be on the outside looking in during the preseason, and that became reality on cut day when BAL got rid of Ray and veteran WR Michael Floyd. Tavon Young is dealing with neck injuries, diminishing their depth at cornerback along with Iman Marshall.

2019 UDFA’s on Roster: T/G Ryan Bates
The Bills cut who many consider their best offensive player in RB LeSean McCoy, who then quickly signed with Kansas City. Buffalo dealt with a good problem relating to their depth on the Offensive Line. They turned that “problem” into a solution by swapping backups Teller and Bodine for 2020 & 2021 draft capital. They released plenty of notable names including veterans and highly sought after UDFA’s.

Carolina acquired Torrey Smith before last season after he won the Super Bowl in Philadelphia, but are letting him go just a year later. Their WR core is pretty solid without Smith or 7th Rd Pick Terry Godwin. They were able to keep 2017 UDFA Bryan Cox on the Practice Squad, and named UDFA Joey Slye the kicker this year with Gano being placed on season-ending IR.

Chicago’s biggest cut was DL Jonathan Bullard, the 2016 3rd Rd Pick who was claimed on waivers by Arizona. Fitts and Denmark were recent late-round picks that didn’t make the roster while Tyler Bray is a developmental QB kept on the Practice Squad. Chicago is going into Opening Day at full health, besides backup swing tackle T.J. Clemmings.

GM John Dorsey is never afraid to make a move. This week, he made plenty, including late-round swaps for bottom-tier players to fill the roster, notable claims/signs, and waiving a plethora of quality players. Troubled RB Kareem Hunt & WR Antonio Callaway will start the season on the Suspension list. The “Scottish Hammer” won the punting job over Britton Colquitt and is the only 2019 UDFA on the 53-man roster.

The big news this week in Dallas was the extension of RB Ezekiel Elliott after a long holdout over the offseason. They also extended OG La’el Collins to lock up their core Offensive Linemen for the foreseeable future. They waived their 5th Rd Picks in each of the last two years, but brought Jackson back on the practice squad. Brandon Knight and Luke Gifford beat out some vets to make the roster as Dallas’ 2019 UDFA class.

Denver got rid of the talented, but disappointing Su’a Cravens, along with other veterans that filled roles for them in the past. QB Drew Lock will start the season on the IR, as will injury-plagued TE Jake Butt, and newly acquired RB Theo Reddick. Malik Reed has not only made the roster, but the UDFA has surpassed 5th Rd pick Justin Hollins for the top backup spot behind Von Miller and Bradley Chubb at EDGE.

Detroit made a flurry of moves to get their 53-man roster ready for the regular season. They have a whopping four undrafted free agents that made the roster, with 3 of them originally signing with them back in April. They shockingly released 2017 2nd Rd Pick Teez Tabor, despite going with 7 CBs on the roster. Also of note, they swapped four-year veteran RB Zach Zenner for notorious Seahawk J.D. McKissic.

Green Bay made a few little trades that involved 2020 7th Rd picks. Other than that, the most noteworthy updates this week came in the WR department. 2018 4th Rd Pick J’Mon Moore was waived, while 2018 6th Rd pick Equanimeous St. Brown was placed on IR. So of the 3 wideouts Green Bay drafted last year, only Marquez Valdes-Scantling is an active member of the roster, and is expected to carry the load for last year’s rookie trifecta.

Houston stole the headlines this week as they finally dealt EDGE Jadeveon Clowney (although for a very modest return), and more surprisingly acquired OT Laremy Tunsil to give them the high-quality blindside protector they’ve been craving so heavily. Lamar Miller’s torn ACL also shook things up, and in smaller news, Matt Kalil, Boddy-Calhoun, and Bryan Anger were all released after originally being projected for starting roles at some point over the last six months.

Regardless of the Antonio Brown rollercoaster, no headline this past month was more surprising than the retirement of QB Andrew Luck. Now that Jacoby Brissett got a short-term extension, he’ll have Brian Hoyer backing him up for the next few years. Indy also participated in this year’s trend of trading picks for low-end roster fillers.

The Rams surprisingly cut Franklin-Myers who was positioned to start after performing well in his 300 rookie snaps last season. 2018 6th Rd Pick Sabastian Joseph is now scheduled to start on the DL, after not playing a single snap in 2018. LA had three UDFA’s make the roster, but they’d prefer none of them play a meaningful snap, unless someone gets injured. LAR only went with 3 RBs despite Gurley’s durability concerns, waiving John Kelly, but retained him on the practice squad to potentially contribute in future seasons.

No team made as many moves as the Dolphins in the week preparing for the season. The Laremy Tunsil trade deservedly got many of the headlines in South Beach after the 2016 1st Rd Pick was sent to Houston for a package that included two 1st Rd Picks. They also cut starting S T.J. McDonald along with other starting-caliber players. With a youth movement fully in place in Miami, they kept five UDFA’s on the roster, the most in the NFL.

Minnesota is looking for a rebound season in 2019, and they’ll be doing it with mostly the same roster intact from the 2018 NFC Championship game. They had to place backup TE David Morgan on the PUP, and cut backup WR Brandon Zylstra and backup C Brett Jones. They also replaced 1st Rd disappointment Josh Doctson evaded Washington D.C. and is now in Minneapolis. Brandon Dillon is the sole UDFA on the roster, but might be replaced once Morgan comes off the PUP.

New England shocked the NFL world (while also shocking nobody) by signing WR Antonio Brown after a tumultuous 6 months in Oakland that didn’t include playing a single snap. The 4x All-Pro will now suit up in a receiving core that includes himself, Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman, and 1st Rd Pick N’Keal Harry, who will miss the 1st eight weeks on the IR. New England has a couple UDFA WR’s that made the roster for the time being, but with Demaryious Thomas, AB, and Josh Gordon now all in the fold, it remains to be seen how long that will last.

With a lack of confidence in the Linebacker corps, New Orleans made a deadline deal for Kiko Alonso and his $4M cap hit in exchange for LB Vince Biegel’s $645K. David Onyemata will play a big role in New Orleans defense, but has to start the 1st week of the season on the suspension list. Newhouse was the most noteworthy release, and Sherels would’ve been a KR candidate had he made the roster.

As the Giants enter a transition year that will likely mark the final season Eli Manning suits up in a Giants uniform, there weren’t too many notable moves coming from NY during the 53-man roster crunch. The team signed Jenkins to a 1-year deal in May, but only had $15K in dead cap. Sam Beal was their supplemental pick last year, and made the initial 53-man roster, but then was placed on IR, so he can be eligible to return midseason.

While the Jets seem to always be surrounded by controversy, no roster moves this week appeared to catch too many headlines. They added some quality players through trade and waivers/signings after the initial 53-man roster crunch. Therefore, they had to cut some notable players as well, but none of the players above were in a position to play much this season anyways. Chris Herndon’s 4-game suspension hurts the most as the 2nd-year TE is poised to take a jump alongside Sam Darnold this year upon his return.

The Antonio Brown saga dominated headlines over the past week, that ultimately ended in his release, as it became clear he wanted out of Oakland. The Raiders had plenty of depth on their 90-man roster, making it difficult to get it to 53 players, as seen on Hard Knocks. Keelan Doss would’ve made the roster had OAK knew AB wouldn’t be a part of their roster this season. He’s now the highest paid practice squad player in the NFL in Jackonsville.

Ryan Shazier continues to be a part of Pittsburgh’s roster (on the PUP), despite probably never playing a snap of football again. Pittsburgh didn’t make many other notable moves, but they did move on from Eli Rogers who spent a few years as their starting slot WR, and now relies on James Washington to be the next in line. Fred Johnson managed to make the team as the only UDFA after Tuzar Skipper was cut last minute for Johnny Holton’s promotion form the Practice Squad.

Jerick McKinnon continued his disastrous run with the 49ers and will officially miss a second consecutive season after signing the 4y/$30M contract a year ago that many considered a vast overpay, and looks even worse now. It’s highly possible the 49ers cut him next year to save $4.8M with him not playing a single snap for the Red & Gold.

Clowney adds an element to Seattle’s defense they thought they lost when they traded Frank Clark earlier in the offseason. The most significant move Tampa Bay made this week was a move expected for a long time with the placement of Jason Pierre-Paul on the NFI. Starting CB Ryan Smith will also miss four games with a suspension. They made a deadline deal for swing tackle Jerald Hawkins and added T.J. Logan to an unimpressive RB room. Their 7th Rd Pick Terry Beckner was the only rookie draft pick to not make the team, but he’ll be a part of their taxi squad.

Tennessee isn’t viewed by many as a team primed to compete this year, and with 1st Rd Pick DL Jeffery Simmons starting the season on the NFI, it will make things more difficult, as he recovers from a torn ACL. They swapped former Chiefs kickers Ryan Succop for Cairo Santos after Succop needed to be placed on the IR. They surprisingly dealt starting slot WR Taywan Taylor for only a 7th Rd Pick as it appeared he would somehow not make the roster.

The big story in DC is OT Trent Williams who hasn’t reported to the team all offseason after being misdiagnosed with an injury. He wants out of the nation’s capital, but the team hasn’t granted his release or traded him and he’ll be placed on the Did Not Report list until further notice. Not many other surprises on their 53-man roster, but kept 4th Rd Pick Bryce Love for future rosters by placing him on the NFI, so he doesn’t take up a 53-man spot.
