The Los Angeles Lakers signed 2x All-Star C Andre Drummond off the buyout market on Sunday, putting them back in the drivers seat to return to the NBA Finals as long as LeBron James and Anthony Davis can stay healthy. Also, a legendary Chris Paul assists streak ended, proving he is one of the greatest facilitators in NBA history, Derrick Jones Jr.’s incredible finish vs. Toronto, and the Suns outlasted the Hornets in an overtime thriller.

Here is the best of the day from March 28, 2021:

Lakers have officially signed C Andre Drummond off the buyout market

The arms race in the NBA continued on Sunday, as the Los Angeles Lakers signed C Andre Drummond just a day after the Brooklyn Nets signed F LaMarcus Aldridge off the buyout market. Drummond, 27, agreed to a buyout on Friday with the Cleveland Cavaliers, who acquired him last year after spending nearly eight seasons in Detroit.

After clearing waivers, Drummond elected to join LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the defending champions. He will need to get up to speed with his new team after sitting out the past six weeks while Cleveland explored a trade, but ultimately couldn’t find any partners. Drummond’s elite rebounding and solid inside scoring should be a boost for the Lakers, who are trying to hold on to a top seed in the West with James and Davis on the shelf.

In 25 games with the Cavaliers this season, Drummond averaged 17.5 PTS and 13.5 REB per game. In his nine NBA seasons after being drafted No. 9 overall by Detroit in 2012, Drummond has averaged 14.6 PTS and 13.8 REB as a perennial rebounding champion contender. He has twice been named an All-Star and has led the NBA in total rebounding four times.

CHRIS PAUL IS THE GREATEST PASSER OF THE 21ST CENTURY

Chris Paul had the first-ever game in his 1,063-game career in which he did not register at least 2 assists, which is absolutely crazy to think about. Paul has not had a single game since 2005 without multiple assists. That was 16 years ago! As this streak ends, it is time to give him the respect he deserves, and that is the recognition of being the greatest passer of this century.

Since 2005, Chris Paul’s lowest assists per game in a single season was 6.7. He was the league’s assists leader four times during his career, tied with Steve Nash for the most during that time frame. Rajon Rondo had three assist titles during Paul’s career. CP3 has averaged a double-double in six seasons, and at age 35, nearly 36, he is fifth in the league in APG.

From his early years in New Orleans, his lob city years in LA, to his new challenge in Phoenix, Paul has been consistently dishing assists at a high clip. His ability to have such impressive assist totals on teams with non-exceptional supporting casts for the large majority of his career adds to his legacy. The end of this career-long streak calls for some appreciation for the best passer of the 21st century.
