February 25, 2022 represents the 50-year anniversary of the Philadelphia Phillies acquiring their greatest pitcher ever Steve Carlton, making it a great time to look at the Phillies’ top-5 players of all time.

Philadelphia Phillies fans have witnessed countless highs and lows throughout the team’s 138-year history. You wouldn’t expect anything less from the oldest, continuous franchise in all of professional American sports. Phillies fans also love to discuss every detail about the greatest players in the history of a ball club. These players are the heroes who single-handedly propel the team to the top of the standings and make them favorites at every sports betting site in Pennsylvania.

The Phillies have had their share of great players through the decades. 11 such legends have been inducted into the National Hall of Fame.  Whittling the list down to the top five is a tall order, but here they are. Honorable mention includes: 1B Ryan Howard, SP Pete Alexander, SP Cole Hamels, SP Curt Schilling, and 2B Chase Utley. OF Bryce Harper could one day find his name on this list as well.

Here are the top 5 greatest Philadelphia Phillies of all time. Create your own rankings below!

PSO Rankings

1
Mike Schmidt (1972-1989)

The greatest player in the history of many franchises is up for debate. Not so with the Phillies. Michael Jack Schmidt was the greatest to put on red pinstripes and no fan would ever argue.

During his 18 year career with the club, Schmidt was a 12x All-Star, 3x NL MVP, 10x Gold Glover, 6x Silver Slugger, 8x NL Home Run leader, and a member of the 1980 World Series championship team, which he was also the Series MVP.

What did this string of accolades earn him?

Mike Schmidt is a member of the Hall of Fame, the Phillies Wall of Fame, and was named to the MLB All-Century Team and MLB All-Time Team. The best 3rd Baseman in history was immortalized with his own statue outside Citizens Bank Park in 2004.

2
Steve Carlton (1972-1986)

Steve Carlton spent 14 of his 24 big league seasons with the Phillies en route to becoming the club’s greatest pitcher. His legacy brought to the city four NL Cy Young awards and a World Series championship in 1980.

Carlton was also a strike-out king, mowing 3,031 batters down during his time with the Phillies. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994. The Phillies have appropriately honored Carlton over the years. His number was retired when he was added to the club’s Wall of Fame in 1989 and he also had a statue erected at Citizens Bank Park in 2004.

3
Jimmy Rollins (2000-2014)

John Kruk is vocal about Jimmy Rollins being the second greatest Phillie ever, and it’s hard to offer a reason to the contrary. J-Roll was the spark plug behind the Phillies’ five consecutive NL East titles between 2007 and 2011 – perhaps the greatest run in club history.

He earned a World Series ring in 2008, was a 3x All-Star, 4x Gold Glove Award winner, and the 2007 NL MVP. Rollins broke Mike Schmidt’s franchise hit record in 2014 with his 2,235th career knock. Fittingly, the previous record-holder was right there to greet J-Roll at first base.

4
Robin Roberts (1948-1961)

A hard-throwing righty, Robin Roberts was another Whiz Kid and an Ashburn contemporary. He pieced together an extraordinary six-season streak from 1950 to 1956 when he won at least 20 games each season. He won 19 games in 1956.

Roberts also clocked seven consecutive All-Star appearances and led the league in Wins, Strikeouts, Complete Games, Innings Pitched, and WHIP at some point throughout his career. His 234 Wins as a Phillie helped earn him eternal enshrinement in Cooperstown in 1976.

5
Richie Ashburn (1948-1958)

The namesake of Citizen Bank Park’s “Ashburn Alley” concourse was the club’s guiding offensive force throughout the 1950s.  Richie Ashburn menaced pitchers while leading the NL in Hits, 3B, BB, AVG, and SB at least once during his career.

He also represented the red pinstripes in four All-Star games. Ashburn led the 1950 Whiz Kids team to the World Series before being swept by the Yankees in his only postseason campaign. The Phillies retired Ashburn’s number in 1979 and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995.
