Walter Payton was selected fourth overall in the 1975 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears out of Jackson State. As a rookie, Payton started in only seven games and recorded 892 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns. By his second season, he was selected to his first out of nine Pro Bowls and first out of five All-Pro teams. The very next season, he led the league in rushing yards (1852), rushing touchdowns (14), rushing yards per game (132.3), yards from scrimmage (2121), and total touchdowns (16) on his way to the 1977 MVP Award.

Walter “Sweetness” Payton was also a part of the infamous ’85 Bears that went 15-1 and won Super Bowl XX. After 13 years in the NFL, including four with over 2000 yards from scrimmage, Payton decided to call it a career and retire. He was later selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

WALTER PAYTON IS THE GREATEST CHICAGO BEAR OF ALL TIME

It is very rare for any player to have a 2000-yard season, but Walter Payton had four of them, with three of them consecutively. Payton’s running ability led Chicago’s offense to a Super Bowl while the defense did the rest. No RB in Bears history has been able to replicate what he has done, as he holds the top eight spots in single-season rush yards in Bears history. Payton is by far the best Bears running back, and is among the all-time greats in the NFL, like Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, and Jim Brown.
