The NFL is a league that is built off of its superstars. Over the years, we’ve seen icons like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees light up the field with their extraordinary talent, securing bucketloads of Lombardis and MVP awards along the way. Today, a new generation of quarterbacks has stepped into the spotlight redefining what it means to be the man under center in 2024.
As the new season approaches, excitement is at a fever pitch. The recently concluded NFL draft saw a record-tying SX QBs drafted in the top ten for just the second time in history. Former USC standout Caleb Williams was the man at the top of the chart, drafted first overall by the Chicago Bears as they look toward a prosperous new future following the ll-fated reign of Justin Fields.
The New England Patriots also turned to yet another new man to fill the cleats of the now-retired Brady. Despite leaving Gilette Stadium back in 2019, the Pats are still yet to find his successor, and they are hoping hotshot Drake Maye could be the man for the job, selecting him with the third overall pick.
So with plenty of new stars entering the league, especially at quarterback, let’s take a look at the division’s best. Here are the top three picks:
When talking about the best quarterbacks in the NFL, Patrick Mahomes is often the first name that comes to mind, and rightfully so. Since taking over as the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018, the former Texas Tech standout has been nothing short of sensational.
He has led the Arrowhead side to four Super Bowls in the last five years, winning three of them including the last two on the bounce. This term, he is looking to take his side to an unprecedented threepeat for the first time in history, with the popular Bovada sportsbook making him a +450 favorite to do exactly that and claim the Lombardi once again.
His ability to throw the football from any angle and under any circumstance is what sets him apart. Whether it’s a no-look pass, a sidearm throw, or a deep bomb while scrambling, Mahomes can do it all. His quick release and pinpoint accuracy make him deadly both in the pocket and on the run.
While he has often been criticized for his physique and ability on the ground, no one can question his heart. Despite having an ankle injury throughout the 2023 playoffs, the 28-year-old still dragged his team kicking and screaming to the first of two straight Lombardis, delivering an MVP performance and rallying his team to overthrow a ten-point deficit to defeat the Eagles at State Farm Stadium in Arizona.
He did the same in the new year as he found a way to neutralize the rampant San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas, and he will be among to do it one more time this season at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
If there is one man who maybe has Mahomes’ number, it’s Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow. The pair have clashed four times since the former Heisman winner was selected with the first overall pick of the 2020 draft, and he has helped his side to victories in three of them. After a historic college career at LSU, where he led the Tigers to a national championship, Jackpo Joey was charged with reviving the fortunes of the ailing Cincy.
Despite facing significant adversity, including a serious knee injury in his rookie season, he has come out fighting and emerged as one of the league’s best young quarterbacks. He led the Bengals to their first Super Bowl appearance in over three decades in his second campaign as well as the AFC Championships the following year.
Last season he suffered a season-ending injury that saw his side miss out on the playoffs altogether. However, this term, he is fit and firing once more, and he will be among to lead his side to the Lombard for the first time in history.
Burrow’s resilience is perhaps his most defining characteristic. Time and again, he has demonstrated the ability to bounce back from setbacks, whether it’s a tough loss or a debilitating injury.
This mental toughness has been on full display in the preseason as he shakes off the elbow injury that saw him miss out on the latter half of the 2023 season, and he will be aiming to make up for the lost time when his side gets the season underway at the New England Patriots on September 8th.
Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens is one of the most electrifying players in the NFL. Since winning the MVP unanimously award in 2019 and becoming just the second man in history to do so – the 27-year-old Jackson has continued to dazzle.
His ability to turn broken plays into big gains makes him a nightmare for defensive coordinators and helped him secure his second MVP award last season, as well as taking his Maryland side to the top of the regular season rankings in the AFC, as well as on to the Conference Championships.
Jackson’s speed and elusiveness are unparalleled. He can outrun almost any defender, turning routine plays into explosive runs. And his passing game has also seen significant improvement as well. He has worked tirelessly to enhance his accuracy and decision-making, becoming a more well-rounded quarterback.
However, question marks still hang over his ability to remain calm under pressure. The Ravens crashed out of the playoffs at the hands of the Chiefs – on home turf no less – last season.
