New Orleans Saints former franchise rushing leader Mark Ingram celebrates his 35th birthday on December 21, 2024 so it’s a great time to look back at what made him so great in NOLA.

Mark Ingram II turned a Heisman-winning collegiate career into a first-round pick entrance to the NFL with the New Orleans Saints in 2011 where he left a significant impact on the franchise’s rushing records during his tenure. Over eight seasons with the Saints, Ingram amassed 6,267 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns, becoming the team’s all-time leading rusher in 2021, surpassing Deuce McAllister.

The Michigan native’s longevity and consistent production earned him two Pro Bowl selections in the Big Easy as well as one more during his time in Baltimore and solidified his reputation as a reliable and powerful running back. His ability to execute in short-yardage situations and contribute as a receiver out of the backfield made him a versatile asset in Sean Payton’s offense for New Orleans.

In 2017, the Saints drafted Alvin Kamara, whose dynamic playing style complemented Ingram’s power-running approach. The duo, known as “Boom and Zoom,” became one of the NFL’s most formidable backfield tandems. Kamara’s versatility and explosive playmaking abilities added a new dimension to the Saints’ offense, leading to his Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2017.

After Ingram’s departure in 2019, Kamara continued to excel, eventually surpassing Ingram’s career rushing records that didn’t top the books for long. In November 2024, Kamara became the Saints’ all-time leading rusher, highlighting his sustained excellence and durability. The transition from Ingram to Kamara showcases the franchise’s ability to develop and utilize top-tier running back talent effectively.
