Originally drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves sixth overall in the 2006 NBA draft, Brandon Roy would make his NBA debut with the Portland Trail Blazers. Roy had a fantastic rookie season averaging nearly 17 PPG on his way to the 2007 Rookie of the Year and an All-Rookie 1st-Team selection. Roy made a leap and became an All-Star his next year, like he would for the next two years thereafter.

2008-09 was Roy’s best season, where he averaged 22.6 PPG and played 78 games, the most in his entire career. Early into the 2009-10 season, Roy injured his right knee which trainers initially labeled a bone bruise. After further examination, it was confirmed that he had suffered a torn meniscus, and he underwent a successful surgery.  Roy’s knees ultimately collapsed and caused his downfall as he was lacking cartilage, and he ended up retiring early at 28 years old after flashing superstar potential.

BRANDON ROY WOULD’VE BEEN A HALL OF FAMER IF NOT FOR INJURIES

Brandon Roy is part of an injury-ridden trio of LaMarcus Aldridge and Greg Oden, who could have caused real problems in the Western Conference if they managed to stay healthy, especially if Portland still would make the trade of Gerald Wallace for a 1st Round pick that turned into one of the best players in franchise history, Damian Lillard. Roy was entering his peak athleticism near the end of the 2010s and was looking like a perennial All-Star and All-NBA candidate, averaging 22.6 PPG, 4.7 RPG, and 5.1 APG.

Roy had surgery the following season after scoring at the same clip, and his knees simply could not keep up with his athleticism over the years. Without injuries, Brandon Roy could have been a very high career scorer and a Hall of Fame-caliber player who could score at will from anywhere on the court. Instead, his legacy is a “what if” story but he put together some amazing highlights before his knees collapsed.

  • Roy was a freak athlete

  • B-Roy causing problems on Defense

  • Career high 52!
