The Detroit Lions have long been one of the NFL’s most unfortunate franchises. Blessed with the Hall of Fame talent of Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders, the Lions have zero playoff wins since 1991. After another failed front office regime, Detroit turned to Dan Campbell to lead the rebuild.

Campbell has the Lions playing high-effort football despite the fact that they lack the talent of most of their opponents. This makes the way they have been losing even more painful. Detroit has now set a NFL record after losing a second game this season on a 50+ yard field goal as time expired.

  • Detroit Lions are the 1st team to lose on a buzzer-beating GW-FG of 50+ YDS multiple times during a season in NFL history
  • Detroit already lost to Baltimore Ravens in Week 3 after Justin Tucker‘s GW NFL record 66-yd FG
  • Only the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars remain winless in the 2021 NFL season (both 0-5)

Campbell made headlines following his hiring this past offseason. In his introductory press conference, he talked about biting off his opponents kneecaps, setting the tone for the type of culture Campbell wanted to cultivate in Detroit. Five games into the season, that hard-nosed mentality has kept the Lions in games many predicted them to lose heavily, but hasn’t gotten them over the top to grab their first win of Dan’s tenure as Head Coach.

This last loss was especially painful, and Campbell was visibly emotional in his press conference. He had tears in his eyes, as he expressed pride in his team’s performance, and promised that this type of effort and performance would be rewarded sooner rather than later.
