They’ve played each other before, but this time it was different. Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence, two former No.1 overall picks dueled it out on Thursday Night Football during a Jaguars-Bengals showdown. Lawrence looked to win the first game of his NFL career after an extremely successful HS/NCAA record, while Burrow looked to defeat “Sunshine” for the second time. In the end, the game concluded with a wild finish that sets up years of Lawrence vs. Burrow battles with this one being just the beginning.

  • Evan McPherson has the most walk-off GW-FG (2) within a player’s 1st 4 career GP in NFL history
  • 1976-77 Buccaneers lost the most consecutive games (26) over the 2021 Jaguars (19) in NFL history
  • 2021 NFL Rookie QB’s are 0-10 when not facing another rookie QB to start the season
  • Lawrence is 31-2 up by 10+ PTS; lost vs. Burrow in 2020 National Championship & 2021 Week 4 MNF
  • Trevor Lawrence is the 1st No.1 pick QB to lose his 1st 3 GP by 10+ PTS since Vinny Testaverde in 1987

EXPECT JOE BURROW VS. TREVOR LAWRENCE TO BE A PRIMETIME MATCHUP FOR A WHILE

COLORS KEY | FULL BENGALS OUTLOOK

Plenty of hype surrounds the matchups between former number one overall picks. Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow both played well this week, however, Burrow went off in the second half of their Thursday night thriller that encapsulated his promising potential in Cincinnati. Granted it was against an 0-3 Jacksonville team, but the Bengals have to be enamored with Burrow’s early progress after suffering a torn ACL in Week 11 last year.

Trevor Lawrence wasn’t too shabby either and had some highlight reel plays to show for it. If he can figure out how to cut down on the turnovers like he did on TNF, then Lawrence should be in a great position going forward, but ball security is often an issue with rookie Quarterbacks. Hopefully this matchup becomes a yearly expedition because the game was entertaining up until the finish. From the National Championship to TNF as youngsters, this is just the beginning of what could be a decade-defining QB matchup.
