Kobe Bryant was drafted straight out of high school by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft, and was subsequently traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. Over the course of his 20 years in LA, the Philadelphia native made a name for himself as one of the best players in NBA history, winning five championships and earning 18 All-Star selections.

Throughout his career and after his retirement, the Lakers legend was incredibly involved in philanthropy and other charity work. However, on January 26, 2020, a shocking helicopter accident tragically took the lives of Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others. Though his time on Earth was cut short, Kobe left a lasting legacy in his 41 meaningful years of life as one of the most influential athletes in sports history that changed the world forever.

KOBE BRYANT WAS ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL ATHLETES OF ALL TIME

There is no denying that Kobe Bryant was one of the best basketball players ever. In his 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, he went to 18 All-Star games while also earning 11 1st-Team All-NBA and nine 1st-Team All-Defense honors. The Black Mamba holds franchise records in a number of statistical categories, and he became the only player EVER with two separate jersey numbers retired by one team as they hang in the rafters of the Staples Center forever.

While he certainly dominated on the court, Bryant also spent considerable time making a difference off the court. He started various foundations that help raise money for underserved communities in the United States and in China, plus he was a strong advocate for women’s basketball and gender equality. Given his exceptional basketball talent, signature “mamba mentality,” and “Girl Dad” moniker, Kobe’s influential legacy will live on forever as he already has his own award for the NBA All-Star Game MVP.
