The two NLDS series’ kicked off on Tuesday as the Braves started the day by mounting a comeback with a 7th inning explosion and the Dodgers overcame a no-hitter through 5 innings with their own powerful frame in the 6th inning against San Diego. Game 2’s in the ALDS split from their Game 1 road victories as the Astros kept their momentum going while Giancarlo Stanton’s continued dominance was outmatched by Tampa Bay’s own power display.

Enjoy the best highlights, facts, & takeaways from Tuesday’s MLB Playoff action:

  • Acuna making statements

  • Braves 7th inning explosion

  • Giancarlo stays hot in Petco

  • Rays HR trifecta overcomes Stanton

  • Double dos of Springer Dingers

  • Braves defensive display

  • Dodgers come alive in the 6th

1. Mookie Betts makes this Dodgers team different than the LA squads of the past

When the Dodgers acquired Mookie Betts back in February, many people believed that move made LA the favorites to win the World Series this year (alongside NYY). While that was due to the on-paper production that Betts adds to this already potent lineup, an underrated aspect of the value he brings is the swagger and confidence this team has with him at the top of the order. Betts broke up the Padres no-hitter and a thunderous 4-run inning ensued to keep LA a perfect 3-0 in the playoffs.

2. No love lost between Atlanta and Miami

Out of all four division-rival Division Series matchups, the Braves-Marlins seemed to have the least appeal (mainly due to Miami’s surprising appearance). However, things picked up right off the bat in Game 1. Right off the bat of Ronald Acuna, of course. The young sensation did his signature bat flip after becoming the youngest player to hit a leadoff bomb in MLB postseason history and Sandy Alcantara was none too pleased. He plunked Acuna the next time around which ended up biting them where it hurts as he came all around for a crucial second run. The city of Miami took two L’s on Tuesday and both MIA squads will look to come from behind against a more talented, better overall team to save their seasons.

3. Yankees pitching will be their downfall

Yesterday, the biggest takeaway of the day was how uncontainable New York’s heavy-hitting lineup was. While that continued to prove true in Game 2 (despite facing one of the most electric pitchers in the game), the Bronx Bombers’ glaring weakness showed its ugly head. Rookie Deivi Garcia got pulled after just one inning but things didn’t get any better with J.A. Happ who allowed two 2-run HRs. As good as NY’s offense is, their lackluster pitching staff can make their opponent appear like just as good of a powerhouse.

After a full slate Tuesday, Wednesday is the only other day left in 2020 guaranteed to feature four MLB postseason games as the Astros can complete the sweep over Oakland with a third straight victory. Teams are starting to get a little deeper into their rotations but strong-pitching teams like LA will always have a strong pitcher on the mound with Clayton Kershaw taking the bump in Game 2 without any fans in the stands, right down the street from his childhood neighborhood as he continues to try and put previous postseason demons in the past. Charlie Morton vs. Masahiro Tanaka has the makings of the best pitching matchup of the day with both teams looking to take a crucial 2-1 series lead in what might be the most unpredictable series remaining.
