One of the most iconic moments of the 1990s, and in the whole of NBA history, was the formation and international dominance of the Olympic USA Men’s Basketball Dream Team. The team allowed era-defining players who had competed for years to team up and demonstrate the full power of the NBA. It also acted as a symbolic event, the change from ’80s to ’90s basketball. This was most apparent in a heated scrimmage between opposing squads lead by Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson

MAGIC JOHNSON PASSED THE TORCH TO MICHAEL JORDAN IN A DREAM TEAM SCRIMMAGE

This particular scrimmage allowed several positional rivalries to come front and center from Karl Malone versus Charles Barkley to Jordan versus Clyde Drexler. The most intense competition at play, however, took place between team captains Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. Magic’s career was coming to a close in 1992, while Jordan was on the rise having won the last two NBA Finals with the Bulls against Portland as well as Magic’s Lakers.

Heated banter was exchanged throughout, with Jordan’s team pulling out the victory in the end. The battle symbolized a passing of the torch from one great to another, although it was more like Jordan stripped it from Magic’s unwilling grasp. Jordan found Magic along with Larry Bird following the scrimmage to let them know in his own words that, “There’s a new sheriff in town” that was prominently featured in the “Last Dance” documentary.
