With the NBA regular season all wrapped up and the play-in tournament set to begin Tuesday, the MLB took center stage in the sports world on Monday night and did not disappoint. Yankees RHP Gerrit Cole broke the all-time record for most consecutive Ks without a BB in a single season, as New York’s ace has been among the best pitchers in baseball in 2021. Also, the White Sox’s Yermin Mercedes went yard off a 47 MPH pitch, PSO gave out its NBA regular season awards, and Hank Aaron became the first player ever to record 3,000 career hits and 500 homers on this day in 1970.

Here is the best of the day from May 17, 2021:

Gerrit Cole broke Corbin Burnes record for the most consecutive Ks without a BB

Gerrit Cole broke the all-time record for most K’s without giving up a BB with his 61st consecutive strikeout, passing Corbin Burns‘ mark of 58 set earlier this season. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, as New York’s ace didn’t have his best stuff in the Yankees’ 5-2 loss to the Texas Rangers. Cole saw his historic streak, that began April 12, end after giving up two BB and five ER while striking out seven batters in 5.0 IP.

Even with his subpar performance Monday night, Cole is still in the midst of his best season as a Major League starter. The 30-year-old righty is tied for the AL-lead in wins with five while owning a 2.03 ERA and a sterling 85-5 K-BB ratio. Cole has lived up to the lofty expectations and then some since inking a 9yr/$324M deal with New York last offseason. The Yankees will need Cole at his best this season with the AL East shaping up to be the most competitive division in baseball, with the top four teams all above .500 and separated by just 2.5 games.
