The ‘Best of the Day’ is a daily PSO original series showcasing the most significant stories, highlights, and facts going on in the land of the NFL, NBA, & MLB every day. Get a recap on EVERYTHING that happened on 5/20 here

The NBA hosted only one game on Thursday and it ended up being a complete blowout as the Washington Wizards obliterated the Indiana Pacers to complete an epic second half of the season to clinch the playoffs against all odds. Russell Westbrook racked up another near triple-double and another player of the day award while Tommy Sheppard’s brilliance since taking over as DC’s GM was given credit where it’s due. PSO also dropped Damian Lillard’s best career highlights and Charles Barkley hit the biggest shot of his career OTD in 1993.

Here is the best of the day from May 20, 2021:

DC dominated Indiana in the final East play-in game to clinch the 8 seed

At the March 25th trade deadline, the Washington Wizards had a 0.4% chance of making the postseason as they owned a disappointing 15-28 record. However, that was before Russell Westbrook TOOK OVER as the leader of the team in the locker room and the best player on the court with a triple-double damn near every night. Another huge factor in DC’s rise was the acquisition of Daniel Gafford who has significantly improved Washington’s biggest weakness: rim protection.

The Wizards played their best game of the season when it mattered most as they destroyed Indiana pretty much throughout the entire game in front of the nation’s capital. Not many people are giving the Wizards a chance against the No.1 seed Philadelphia 76ers (like most 8 seeds), but this DC squad has been on a tear in the second half of the season and sports a very respectable 17-6 record when Daniel Gafford plays, proving him to be a true difference-maker. They’ll need him and the rest of the bigs to do their best in limiting Joel Embiid while the Westbrook vs. Embiid storyline will be brought back to the forefront.

TOMMY SHEPPARD HAS PROVEN TO BE A GREAT GM FOR DC MOVING FORWARD

The Washington Wizards clinched the eighth spot in the East after a dominant performance versus Indiana on Thursday. It was a great team effort, as many players balled out. Bradley Beal had a game-high 25 points, Russell Westbrook was two boards away from a triple-double, Rui Hachimura shot 75% from the field with 18 points, and Daniel Gafford posted a double-double off the bench. One thing many of these players have in common is that they were brought to DC during the Tommy Sheppard era.

Sheppard was appointed the interim general manager for DC back in April 2019 and was elevated to the GM position three months later in July. Since taking over, he has made many great moves that has Washington in the playoffs for the first time in three years. Some of these changes he’s made include drafting Hachimura, as well as acquiring Westbrook, Davis Bertans, and Gafford in clear winning trades. All four of these players have been great for DC and are key reasons why they made the postseason this year.

The Wizards had their highest win% in three seasons, and have been one of the best teams in the NBA during the second half of the year, especially when mid-season pickup Daniel Gafford has been in the lineup (17-6). Additionally, many of his new players are having their best years in major stat categories.

Russ had a career-high in assists, Gafford in points and rebounds, and Hachimura in points. Sheppard is proving to be the long-term guy at GM for Washington, and they have a bright future with him running the show. While the Head Coach on the sidelines might need to be changed sooner than later, Sheppard has proven to be a high-quality decision-maker in the front office and is building DC back to being a perennial playoff contender.
